Civic issues
Topics getting the most attention in Hudson public meetings, ranked by how frequently they come up.
Public works excess soils and Barlow Road sidewalk
Two consent items affect infrastructure: a change order for unexpected excess soils at the public works site (insurance may reimburse ~$1.7 million), and a design contract for the Barlow Road sidewalk connecting Nicholson Drive to the hike-and-bike trail.
No right turn on red at SR 303 and Hayden Parkway
A consent ordinance will let the city install and enforce no-right-turn-on-red signs at E. Streetsboro and N. Hayden Parkway, requested in connection with the schools.
W. Barlow Road railroad crossing exemption
School buses must currently stop at the long-unused Barlow Road rail crossing. Council agreed to legislate an exemption, with tracks to be removed under the rails-to-trails grant later.
Bridge Project Updates (Prospect Street and Route 91)
The Prospect Street Turnpike bridge reopens around October 23; the State Route 91 bridge follows in late November. Good news for commuters who have been detouring for months.
Truck traffic on SR 91 and SR 303
Residents periodically ask the city to reroute or limit trucks through the 91/303 intersection. Staff found the city can't limit trucks by size under state law, and a weight limit would need ODOT approval and enforcement the city can't staff. Focus may shift to improving the turning movements.
Walk and Bike Plan Sidewalk Ranking Methodology
A parent urged Council to prioritize sidewalks in Hudson Park Estates and the northeast quadrant, since the school district doesn't bus students within 1.5 miles. Bird said sidewalks will be revisited in a few months after re-evaluating finances hit by JoAnn's closure.
Boston Mills Road resurfacing
Council approved a federal-aid agreement with ODOT to resurface Boston Mills Road from State Route 303 to the west corporation limit.
State Route 303 Speed Limit Request
Resident Robert Papes asked council to lower the SR 303 speed limit to 35 mph to the Boston Heights line, saying drivers routinely exceed the posted limit. Council Member Brezovec explained ODOT requires a speed study; the city manager will revisit one that was done years ago.
Hines Hill Road Grade Separation Funding
The Ohio Rail Development Commission raised its grant for the Hines Hill Road grade separation from about $2.89 million to $4.29 million.
Senior transportation program and donated van
Hudson Community Foundation and Hudson Senior Network raised funds for a passenger van so residents over 65 can get rides; Council will consider accepting the donation May 19.
Downtown pedestrian safety funding boost
A proposed $127,884.34 funding increase for Phase 2 of the downtown pedestrian project — new curb ramps, sidewalk on S. Main Street, and upgraded pedestrian signals along SR 91 and SR 303.
